Wizarding America is divided into territories in much the same way that Muggle America is divided into states. The total number of these territories is currently unknown – though they number fewer than the states of Muggle America – but includes Alta California, Central, Deseret, New Amsterdam, Arcadia, Plymouth, Roanoke, and the Indian territory of Dinétah. When European wizards immigrated to the New World, four original territories were established.

When European wizards immigrated to the New World, four original territories were established. Each territory is administered by a Territorial Governor and a Territorial Senate; according to Professor Grinder, only "a handful" have been women. Each territory is governed from a Territorial Headquarters such as the one in Chicago.
