Tony Stewart started 7th and led 36 of 70 laps, winning his first Shootout over Dale Earnhardt. This edition of the Shootout featured several major changes. First, the format was once again changed. The race was increased from 25 laps to 70 laps, and one two-tire green flag pit stop was required. Additionally, caution laps would count, but the race had to finish under green, with the Craftsman Truck Series' green-white-checkered rule applying if necessary. In addition to the previous year's pole winners being eligible, the race also included past winners of the Shootout, if they were not already locked into the race. Also, because second-round qualifying was discontinued for the 2001 season, the Shootout Qualifier was eliminated. The second-round qualifying winners from the previous season were entered into a blind draw to select which driver would enter the Shootout, as had been done under the format used from 1979 to 1997.
