In addition to the previous year's pole winners being eligible, the race also included past winners of the Shootout, if they were not already locked into the race. Also, because second-round qualifying was discontinued for the 2001 season, the Shootout Qualifier was eliminated. The second-round qualifying winners from the previous season were entered into a blind draw to select which driver would enter the Shootout, as had been done under the format used from 1979 to 1997.
