  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a science fiction family film released in the year 1982.
  • Released by Universal Pictures, E.T. was a blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time—a record it held for ten years until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film, surpassed it in 1993. Critics acclaimed it as a timeless story of friendship, and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey. The film was re-released in 1985, and then again in 2002 to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary, with altered shots and additional scenes.

  • The concept for the film was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents' divorce in 1960. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the stalled science fiction/horror film project Night Skies. It was shot from September to December 1981 in California on a budget of US$10.5 million. Unlike most motion pictures, it was shot in roughly chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast.
  • E.T. the Extra Terrestrial is a 1982 film directed by Steven Spielberg about an alien left behind on Earth who befriends a young boy and his siblings in the suburbs of California. During a scene with E.T. and Gertie (played by Drew Barrymore), Sesame Street plays on the TV long enough for two sketches to appear. The first is an animated film about the letter B that aids E.T. in learning how to speak. The second scene features Big Bird introducing Grover in the courtyard as he demonstrates two chin-ups (this scene has been released commercially on Old School: Volume 1 as an insert for Episode 0536). The audio that ends the scene, however, was taken from Episode 1364 to provide a more appropriate dialogue for the film: Big Bird observes a rocket ship and remarks, "I think it came from outer
  • The game is infamous for contributing to Atari's downfall in the event that would become known as the great video game crash of 1983. Atari obtained the rights to E.T. and hired the experienced game designer Howard Scott Warshaw to produce a game based on the movie, however Warshaw was only given 5 weeks in order to meet the deadline for the Christmas shopping season. This resulted in a rushed game that was incoherent and filled with bugs. The game also used mechanics invented by Warshaw that was completely new at the time, and so many gamers were alienated. The game was one of Atari's biggest commercial flops, and the following year the company went bankrupt. As a result nearly every unsold copy of the game were recalled and burried in Alamorgodo, New Mexico, along with other unsold Atar

  • In 2006, after a spaceship landed in the River Thames, people celebrated all over London, especially on the Powell Estate, where some residents put up a banner saying "ELLO E.T.", a reference to the main character of the film (or possibly just to extraterrestrials in general). (TV: Aliens of London) When Florence Finnegan, a Plasmavore who was hiding out in Royal Hope Hospital, revealed that she was an alien in 2008, the Tenth Doctor (himself posing as a human) jokingly asked if the hospital had an "E.T. department". (TV: Smith and Jones)
