He was raised in the American Midwest, working for most of his life in New York. He attended Princeton University and is one of the founding members of McConnell Wetenhall & Co. Inc. The company has been involved in investment banking and also holds interests in real estate and natural resources. He was also a co-owner of the Boston Patriots of the American Football League during the late 1960s and continued as an owner of the New England Patriots when the franchise entered the NFL. He also was a co-owner of a North American Soccer League team in the 1970s. He was granted The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from McGill University as a testament to the pivotal role he played in the redevelopment of the Montreal Alouettes and the accompanying expansion of the McGill University's Percival Molson Stadium. He was granted McGill University's highest honour as part of the school's fall convocation ceremonies at Place des Arts on November 23, 2011.
