The Phi Society was formed in 1883 when the members of Phi Delta Theta left the national fraternity to form a local fraternity because of conflicts of interest with the national organization. The Phi Society of 1883 members, commonly referred to as the "Phis", maintain many old Phi Delta Theta traditions. While most of these traditions remain part of secret and sacred Phi ritual, several have emerged into public view and are indeed recognized as normal conventions of the fraternity.
