Puerto Rico, also referred to as Porto Rico, is a Caribbean nation in the Greater Antilles. It is a constitutional presidential republic with a population of 4,120,456 as of the 2012 census. Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony until the end of World War Two, when the Caribbean political order saw great upheaval. Puerto Rico suffered under the dictatorship of Luis Negrón López in the 1960s and 1970s until the country was liberalised in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly after American military intervention from 1986-1989.
