| - Sergeant Gerald Roberts was a human member of the UNSC Army. Born in 2531 on the Insurrectionist colony of Haven, when Gerald was only seven years old, his family's land was confiscated by the government, and they were sent to a work camp on the inhospitable countryside. For five years, Roberts and his family worked and suffered, eventually only leaving him, the oldest child, as the only remaining family member alive. In May of 2543, as he was about to be beaten to death by a sentry for falling asleep during work detail, Roberts was saved by a unit of the Haven Free Army, who were performing a raid on the camp. Taken to the unit's headquarters deep in the Haven forests, Roberts began a slow road to recovery, and it was only when he became sixteen that he had fully recovered from the years of malnourishment, beatings, and emotional trauma he had endured at the hands of the government. In 2549, Roberts, feeling a duty to the HFA, and to bring down the oppressive Koslovic derived dictatorship, enlisted in the Free Army as an infantryman, although he frequently also acted as an aerial gunner aboard UNSC supplied UH-144 tiltrotor helicopters. In 2554, Roberts and the HFA aided UNSC in finally toppling the Haven Democratic Republic. After the victory, the HFA peacefully disbanded, but Roberts, with dreams of finally helping rid the galaxy of organizations such as the HDR, enlisted in the UNSC Marine Corps. Assigned to the frontier colonies to aid in peacekeeping operations, Roberts became known amongst his comrades as merciful when it came to young rebel soldiers, but had to be held back when he confronted rebel officers and dictators who were abusing the population of colonies.
