  • Ophthalmosaurus was an ichthyosaur - a fish/dolphin-like marine reptile - of the Middle to Late Jurassic period (200 to 145 million years ago), named for its extremely large eyes.
  • Ophthalmosaurus had a certain resemblance to the swordfish due to its long snout and end. The head was round with two large eyes adapted to night hunting. It had fins instead of legs, as well as the tail of a fish and a dorsal fin. Relative to its body size, Ophthalmosaurus had the largest eyes of any vertebrate. Its eyes, 4 inches in width, took up most of the space in the skull. They were protected by bony plates, which most likely helped to keep the shape of the eyeballs against water pressure at depth.
  • Ophthalmosaurus is famous for having some of the largest (if not the largest) eyes compared to its body size of almost any creature.
  • Opthalmosaurus, an ancestorof the itchysaurs, it was one of the fastest reptiles in the mid-jurrasic and may easily escape a Lippleurodon attack. It had the largest eyes of any vertebrate, larger than those of todays giant sqiud. Its eyes helped it hunt for squid and fish. It also helped it look fo seaweed and avoid Predators. • Ophthalmosaurus is a type of reptile native to the middle to late Jurassic period. Connor Temple included the Opthalmosaurus in his database of prehistoric creatures. (Episode 1.1) Opthalmosaurus, one of a group of marine reptiles called ichthyosaurs, had a graceful 6 m long dolphin-shaped body. Its almost toothless jaw was adapted for catching squid and fish. It had the largest eyes of any vertebrate. Fossil evidence shows that the eyeballs were surrounded by a ring of bone, which would have given support against water pressure. This suggests that it hunted in deep dark water.
  • The genera Apatodontosaurus, Ancanamunia, Baptanodon, Mollesaurus, Paraophthalmosaurus, Undorosaurus and Yasykovia were all considered junior synonyms of Ophthalmosaurus by Maisch & Matzke, 2000.[1] However, all recent cladistic analyses found that Mollesaurus periallus from Argentina is a valid genus of ophthalmosaurid.[2][3][4] Ophthalmosaurus natans is probably not a species of Ophthalmosaurus either,[2][4] for which the generic name Baptanodon Marsh, 1880 is available. Undorosaurus's validity is now accepted by most authors, even by Maisch (2010) who originally proposed the synonymy.[3][5][6][7][8] and the two other Russian taxa might be also valid.[3][7] Ophthalmosaurus chrisorum Russell, 1993 was moved to its own genus Arthropterygius in 2010 by Maxwell.[9]
