Daniel Clive Wheldon (born 22 June 1978 in Emberton, Buckinghamshire, England, United Kingdom – 16 October 2011 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, near North Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, United States) was a British racing driver who won the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011, along with the IndyCar title in 2005. Wheldon was killed in a 15-car pile up at the final race of the 2011 IndyCar season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada. The race was subsequently cancelled, without any final results. This was the first of two motorsport deaths in the space of a week, with Italian Marco Simoncelli dying in the Malaysian MotoGP round on October 23. Wheldon's death meant that he would not defend his Indy 500 title in 2012. In 2006 he was offered a place in the BMW Sauber Formula One team, but declined on discovering he would not be assured a regular drive. He would have considered entering Formula One at the end of his contract with Chip Ganassi.
