In 1940, darkhorse candidate Wendell Willkie of Indiana used the Fall of France and the attack on Great Britain by Nazi Germany to appeal to the growing American interest in supplying Britain and other Allied nations. He not only won the Republican nomination, he also won the Presidency against Democratic incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt.
