  • Tom and Jerry won numerous awards and critical acclaim in its heyday and maintains popularity to this day, thanks to prominent reruns on the Children's Republic of Cartoons. Hanna and Barbera themselves later attempted to cash in on the craze with their own rehashes of the cat-and-mouse duo, such as a '70s Saturday morning cartoon where Tom and Jerry are friends(?) and a cutesy '90s movie where Tom and Jerry are not just friends but also talk(?!), but these greatly impaled in comparison to the original.
  • Tom and Jerry is a New Magical Event.
  • In each cartoon, Tom the cat would try to chase and catch Jerry the mouse, often because the housemaid would demand that Tom catch the mouse or be thrown out of the house. Inevitably, his plans would fail. Throughout the series, neither Tom nor Jerry spoke regularly, though other cats and mice would, and Tom would often yelp or occasionally utter a sentence or two.
  • Tom and Jerry are a pair of goldfish, seen in Sesame Street Episode 2238 (street scenes recycled from an earlier season). The goldfish can't sing or write letters, but they swim and eat. They belong to Iolai, one of the kids. Their names are a reference to the MGM cartoon characters created by Hanna-Barbera, and they were included in Animal Planet's 50 Greatest TV Animals.
  • "The Worry Song" in "Road to Rupert" superimposed Stewie over the figure of Jerry Mouse dancing with Gene Kelly from the film Anchors Aweigh. Peter and Lois spend the day in bed together in "Valentine's Day in Quahog" watching television including the final episode of Tom and Jerry in which Tom hires an exterminator to finally get rid of Jerry, taking at least one of his oversized mallets as a souvenir.
  • Performer(s) Appeared in Thomas "Tom" Cat and Jerry Mouse are an animated cat-and-mouse duo created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for a series of cartoon shorts distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Originally named Jasper and Jinx in their debut cartoon Puss Gets the Boot, they became MGM's most famous cartoon stars, starring in numerous cartoon shorts from then until 1967, as well as in various television shows and movies since then. Tom and Jerry are almost always battling each other and causing a lot of mayhem and destruction as a result. Usually, Jerry is the one who emerges victorious at the end of the short, though Tom manages to get the last laugh on rare occasions.
  • I suppose we're making progress. The feeling of victory is being ebbed away by the faces of Muzza, Garnett, Allen, Desola, Rivas... ...and George. Is this it? Did we really take Carentan? Part of me just wishes the Germans would attack just so I can get these thoughts out of my head. My Dad used to tell me that it was the quiet times after combat that scared him the most. Now I understand what he meant.

The characters acquired their present names in a contest at MGM (animator John Carr submitted the winning names) and went on to win seven Academy Awards.

Production of Tom and Jerry shorts returned to Hollywood under Chuck Jones's Sib Tower 12 Productions in 1963; this series lasted until 1967, making it a total of 161 shorts. The cat and mouse stars later resurfaced in television cartoons produced by Hanna-Barbera and Filmation Studios during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; a feature film, Tom and Jerry: The Movie, in 1992 (released domestically in 1993); and in 2000, their first made-for TV short, Tom and Jerry: The Mansion Cat for Boomerang.
