Issued in 2003, the Austrian Broadband Initiative sets out various recommendations to, among other things, promote Austria’s transition to an information and knowledge-based society, develop a telecommunications infrastructure, and bridge the social and geographical digital divide. Recommendations of the initiative include creating a task-force to help with implementation, promoting universal coverage in regions where broadband rollout is not supported by a viable business case, and encouraging e-government initiatives and government-supplied content. More recently, Austria set a goal of having broadband speeds of up to 25 Mbps available to all Austrians by 2013.
