The 1996 Brickyard 400 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 3, 1996. Dale Jarrett took the lead with a few laps to go, but managed to claim the victory, holding off teammate Ernie Irvan. Terry Labonte finished 3rd and reclaimed the points lead by 61 markers on Dale Earnhardt (15th). Jarrett also started the tradition of kissing the bricks at the start/finish line after winning the race. Stats
