There was a dispute among Wonder, his former writing partner Lee Garrett, and Lloyd Chiate as to who actually wrote the song. Chiate claimed in a lawsuit that he and Garrett wrote the song years before its 1984 release; however a jury ultimately sided with Wonder. In 1986, Stevie Wonder appeared as a guest star on the American NBC television sitcom, The Cosby Show, in Season 2, Episode "A Touch of Wonder", where he performs a studio rendition of 'I Just Called to Say I Love You' accompanied by Claire Huxtable, played by Phylicia Rashād, with the children of the Huxtable family.[citation needed]
