Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (魔法少女リリカルなのは Mahō Shōjo Ririkaru Nanoha) is a thirteen-episode anime that aired between October 1 and December 24, 2004, and is the first series in the main Nanoha continuity. A direct light novel adaptation of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha was published in 2005, shortly before the sequel series, Nanoha A's, went on air. Another retelling was released in Winter 2009 as a theatrical movie titled Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st. It has been stressed that the movie did not necessarily overwrite the series as canon, but told a new parallel history.

- Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is an anime following the adventures of the titular Takamichi Nanoha and her friends. There are three seperate seasons, each with their own story arc: the original MGLN, covering the Jewel Seeds; MGLN A's covering the Book of Darkness; and StrikerS, set a decade later (Nanoha starts her career as a magical girl at the age of nine) facing Jail Scaglietti.
- In the first season, the nine-year-old Takamachi Nanoha collects Jewel Seeds alongside the alien Yuuno Scrya, though she is opposed by the mysterious Fate Testarossa, who collects them for an unknown reason. In the second, Nanoha and Fate fight together to stop the Wolkenritter, who hunt down mages and magical creatures to complete an ancient artifact that will surely bring destruction.
