Advanced Tactical Training was a special course for Starfleet officers. Officers must be recommended for this training. It was so difficult and challenging, in fact, that half of the class washed out each year. Ro was later able to use the training to trick the USS Enterprise-D and "steal" supplies from it while working undercover with the Maquis before actually defecting. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike" )

It was a highly challenging course (half those who took it failed to complete the course) and officers wishing to take it had to be recommended by a superior officer. Part of the course curriculum was designed by Elias Vaughn. In 2255, in an alternate reality, James T. Kirk took part in Advanced Tactical Training. Kirk and Viktor Tikhonov were the captains of Team Delta and Team Alpha respectively in the three ATT mission finals, devoted to First Contact, Security and Science scenarios. Kirk's team performed better in the First Contact final, but Tikhonov's team was victorious in the Security final, the Derelict Cairo scenario. Kirk's team received an extremely positive performance assessment on the Science final, the Tanika Station scenario, from the test's programmer, Commander Spock. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Delta Anomaly) At the recommendation of Captain Jean-Luc Picard Ro Laren attended the course, and graduated top of her class in 2370. (TNG episode: "Preemptive Strike"; DS9 novel: Avatar, Book Two) Following the completion of the course Ro was reassigned to the USS Enterprise-D where Admiral Alynna Nechayev believed her training made her an ideal candidate for a mission to infiltrate the Maquis. (TNG episode: "Preemptive Strike")
  • Advanced Tactical Training was a special course for Starfleet officers. Officers must be recommended for this training. It was so difficult and challenging, in fact, that half of the class washed out each year. Between 2369 and 2370, Ro Laren attended Advanced Tactical Training per the recommendation of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. After her training, Admiral Alynna Nechayev felt that Ro's training qualified her for an infiltration mission of the Maquis. Ro was hesitant and even mentioned that one of her instructors in Tactical Training (a lieutenant commander) was sympathetic to the Maquis. He resigned from Starfleet and joined the Maquis. Ro was later able to use the training to trick the USS Enterprise-D and "steal" supplies from it while working undercover with the Maquis before actually defecting. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike" ) This instructor was intended by the producers to be a reference to Commander Chakotay following the creation of Star Trek: Voyager. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion) Ro's article at StarTrek.com states this as part of her biography. [1] However, VOY: "In the Flesh" established that Chakotay resigned on March 3rd, 2368, i.e., already around the time Ro was released and reinstated. Either Chakotay continued as an instructor in some capacity despite his resignation, or Ro had already attended some courses of the Advanced Tactical Training before that.
