- Ampersand, officially Federation of Ampersand, is a country consisting of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and numerous small islands. There is no neighboring countries around its border. For at least 40,000 years, before the European settlement in the late 18th century, Ampersand was inhabited by Polynesian tribes. After discovery by Dutch in 1606, Great Britain gradually claimed eastern half of Australia as a penal colony. In subsequent decades, the British gradually explored the continent and the entire continent were established into six different Crown Colonies.
- Ampersand is Yorick's Capuchin monkey and the only other male mammal to survive the plague. Yorick is raising Ampersand, a helper monkey who will eventually be trained to help an individual with a severe disability (this scenario is based on the real-life Boston organization Helping Hands). Yorick and Ampersand develop a close bond, and the monkey also bonds with other characters as well. Yorick states that he named him Ampersand after the symbol & in order to feel closer to his girlfriend Beth as he had thought of them as Yorick & Beth.
- The town proper comprises an area of 5.2 square kilometers, or 7.7 triangular ones. An insignificant river, the Slippery Squidge, flows along the southern side of the town. Where it meets the sea a shallow bay accommodates small boats, pelicans, starry flounder, and skinnydipping hippies. Offshore lurks Bonebottom Reef, a basalt ledge where many a Malaysian freighter has come to grief and spilled its cargo of life-sized rubber Leonard Nimoy dolls into the sea. Such shipwrecks are common. Many of us in Ampersand have closets full of these floppy Spock-shaped effigies.

For at least 40,000 years, before the European settlement in the late 18th century, Ampersand was inhabited by Polynesian tribes. After discovery by Dutch in 1606, Great Britain gradually claimed eastern half of Australia as a penal colony. In subsequent decades, the British gradually explored the continent and the entire continent were established into six different Crown Colonies. On January 1st, 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. The commonwealth maintained a stable liberal democracy until Tampa Affairs. The commonwealth was disbanded when Western Australia declared its independence. Christmas Island also declared independence on April 18th 2012, changing name to Ampersand. Ampersand rapidly conquered northern half of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and western Solomon Island. A developing country, Ampersand's economy is growing rapidly. Ampersand also ranks high on quality of life, education, economic freedom, and protection of civil liberties and political rights. It is a member of NNC.

A dozen kilometers inland the Coast Range rises to a peak of 1034 meters, known locally as Hamster Mountain. This minor peak was named by early settlers for the reddish-brown mammals which roamed its grassy summit. These, however, were not hamsters but elk. It was an easy mistake to make. An early name for the town was "Hamster Sande's" -- although this name had nothing to do with either Hamster Mountain or with the sands of the beach. Instead, the name honored Captain Hubert "Hamster" Sande, a smuggler of counterfeit rump-flanges whose ship struck on Bonebottom Reef in 1832. But we will speak more of Captain Sande in our "History" section.

Issue 60 shows an aged Ampersand during a flashback during Yorick's visit to Agent 355's grave. Yorick, not wanting Ampersand to suffer, feeds him a poisoned grape, and Ampersand dies at 355's grave. When the original Yorick is shown in his cell, he is accompanied by many clones of Ampersand, all acting well behaved, and laments, "A hundred monkeys later and they still haven't gotten him right."
