The Runaway Percy is mended after the coal crash, but soon after Thomas comes down with an illness. On his return, he has to manage with stiff brakes, as the Works had left the brakes stiff. Things go well, until Thomas' fireman is ill and a "relief" fireman forgets about the brake problem, so Thomas starts on his own. Harold has to take an inspector to stop Thomas. Thomas cannot describe the relief he felt when his brakes were applied! Better Late Than Never Repairs on the Viaduct are being carried out and the engines have to be extra careful when crossing. This makes the engines late and Thomas cross. One day, Bertie teases Thomas about how he might manage to win a race against Thomas- something he denies. James runs late so Thomas has to hurry. However, he sees Bertie broken down. Thomas feels sorry for Bertie, so takes his passengers and gets help. The next day, Bertie arrives to thank Thomas. Drip Tank Percy decides to put the whole argument about the coal behind him and be friends with Thomas again. This, unfortunatly, backfires when a branch hits Percy and Thomas is unsympathetic about it. The next evening, Percy asks Toby on the defination of a drip, having heard a boy call his friend one. Thomas, feeling annoyed, calls Percy a drip. Percy is most offended, so refuses to help when Thomas breaks a siderod and it punctures his water tank. Percy changes his mind and helps Thomas back to the shed. Thomas, ashamed of his behaviour, apologises to Percy and asks to be friends again. Percy says yes and the two have remained the best of friends ever since.
