The AN/PSQ-310 combines an image intensifier tube (II) and IR imaging technology. The AN/PSQ-310 allows both methods to be used together or individually, and is powered by four AA type batteries allowing continuous combined use of II and IR for 11 hours. The device can be used for a further 10 hours in II mode.

abstract
| - The AN/PSQ-310 combines an image intensifier tube (II) and IR imaging technology. The AN/PSQ-310 allows both methods to be used together or individually, and is powered by four AA type batteries allowing continuous combined use of II and IR for 11 hours. The device can be used for a further 10 hours in II mode. Classified as a passive night vision device, the AN/PSQ-310 can provide vision through thermal imaging even in situations where ambient light is insufficient for the image intensifiers, thus eliminating the need for infrared illumination (active night vision), though infrared tactical lights dramatically improve vision through IR illumination, though at the risk of detection should the enemy also be using IR goggles. It can also see through battlefield obscurants such as smoke and fog. The combined technologies allow better target identification and recognition, thereby improving the soldier's mobility and situational awareness. Rifle-mounted aiming lasers can also be integrated with it, allowing the user to "see" the invisible laser beam in IR mode. The most recent models enable digitally fused images to be exported and imported from and to the battlefield. The system also incorporates a filter that reacts to light as it passes through, preventing the wearer from being blinded by sudden bursts of light such as flares, flashbang grenades, and searchlights.
