It was launched on 13 August 2005, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Federal Parliament's passage of a bill amending the Marriage Act of 1961 so that it allowed only opposite-sex couples to marry. It aims to achieve fairness for same-sex couples in Australian law in areas like superannuation, workplace benefits, marriage, national anti-discrimination laws covering sexuality and gender identity, and equality for families headed by same-sex couples. Its spokespeople are Rod Swift and Kelly Pilgrim-Byrne, both of whom are involved with Gay and Lesbian Equality (GALE) in Western Australia.
