The Black Volcano, formerly the Black Crater or Great Crater, stands on the former site of Okoto's Capital City. The city was drawn into the Shadow Realm, leaving behind a vast crater, after Ekimu used his Hammer of Power to knock the Mask of Ultimate Power from his brother Makuta's face. Later, Umarak traveled to the crater and used the power granted him by Makuta to raise the Black Volcano from the depths. At it's peak, the portal to the Shadow Realm that was intended to enable Makuta's escape formed, and here Ekimu and the Toa confronted Umarak in a bid to stop him. The portal was eventually formed when Makuta destroyed Umarak, but the Toa sacrificed their powers to trap Makuta in the Shadow Realm once again.
