It turned out to be a wise choice since Hot Stuff ranks as one of the most popular characters to come out of Harvey after Casper and Richie Rich.A popular theory implies that Hot Stuff was created using Evil casper from the cartoon "fright from wrong" 1957 as main inspiration, which makes him casper's antithesis. According to most of his comics devils have longer lifespans, so hot stuff is at least 200-years old, however his age is really inconsistent Since according to other comics he over 2000 years old, canonically in the future hot stuff became an adult and he married his girlfriend, princess charma.

The character has not been published in comics since then. Warren Kremer and Howard Post were the artists who helped define the look of Hot Stuff, drawing many comic book covers and stories over the years. Ernie Colón was another major comics artist who drew Hot Stuff. Unlike the other main characters in the Harvey universe like Casper the Friendly Ghost, Spooky and Wendy the Good Little Witch, who crossed over into one another's stories, Hot Stuff was written with a strong tendency to remain separate, in his own world. However, there still are a few instances, even though they are very rare where Spooky, Casper and Wendy do cross paths with him. Despite this, there are other much more firmer characters that frequented Hot Stuff's universe. These characters include Stumbo the Giant (created by Warren Kremer and Larz Bourne) as a back-up in Hot Stuff in 1957, Katnip the cat, Herman the mouse and Princess Charma who was a good fairy. Whenever, they appeared though they seemed to annoy Hot Stuff somewhat and at times even make him very mad. Although without them there would be no character interaction and no one for Hot Stuff to talk to.
