| - After making his début at the 1959 French Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari, Gurney would drive for a variety of teams, and earned the respect of many competitors in the field. Although Gurney would never win the Championship, the father of Jim Clark revealed to Gurney that he was the only driver that Clark had ever feared, something which Gurney kept quiet for several years. His best career finish would be fourth in 1965, with half the number of points of Champion Clark.
- Daniel Sexton Gurney (born April 13, 1931) is one of the most important figures in the history of American auto racing. The son of a Metropolitan Opera star, he was born in Port Jefferson, New York, but moved to California as a teenager. He has been a driver, a car manufacturer and a team owner at racing's highest levels since 1958. He is one of only four US-born drivers to win a Formula One Grand Prix other than the Indianapolis 500, and the only one to win in a car of his own manufacture. (The other three are Richie Ginther, Phil Hill and Peter Revson)
