  • 1. In 1492, Columbus set sail from Spain in three ships bound for the Indies. His plan, backed by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain, was to sail west to reach India which was conventionally reached by traveling east. His goal was to establish a new trade route enabling Spain to compete in the profitable spice trade. Which of the following is not the name of one of Columbus's ships? a. La Tina b. La Pinta c. Santa Maria d. Santa Clara 2. The Santa Clara is mostly known by its nickname La Nina. The Santa Maria was a ship called a carrack and was the largest of Columbus' three ships. It was a fifteenth century sailing ship with three or four masts and was the kind of ship that the Spanish and Portuguese used to explore in this time period. Go to the Waterfall in Australia and say: "I could sail a boat here!" 3. Some of the most valuable navigational information that Columbus contributed to the world was his idea that he could take advantage of the prevailing winds to speed his way home. The winds blow consistently and predictably from the east or the west depending upon the latitude. By using this knowledge, he could then avoid the more time consuming technique of sailing at an angle against the wind. What are these winds called? a. Water Spouts b. Hurricane Winds c. Trade Winds d. Eternal Winds 4. It is believed that Columbus received his information about the winds by traveling where he heard stories about Norse sailors and Inuit kayakers on how to use these winds. Go to Audubon's Tranquil Waterfall in Western Age and say: "Happy Columbus Day!" Press continue to finish the quest
