Ser Gerold Hightower was Lord Commander of the Kingsguard during the reign of Aerys II Targaryen, preceeding Ser Barristan Selmy. He died alongside Ser Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy in battle against Lord Eddard Stark and Howland Reed.

Durant la Rébellion de Robert, Hightower fut envoyé localiser le prince Rhaegar Targaryen, qui lui donna l'ordre avec Dayne de protéger la Tour de la Joie qui renfermait Lyanna Stark.

Down in King's Landing, the Hand of the King Kevan Lannister objects to his nephew Jaime attending a small council meeting. Jaime counters by stating he has a position there, given he is the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Cersei then asks Pycelle to vouch for his presence there, and the Grand Maester brings up the precedent of Gerold being on the Council during Aerys II's reign.
