John Prescott was a British politician who served as leader of the opposition (1996 - 2000). He previously held numerous cabinet positions under Denis Healey, John Smith and Neil Kinnock. Following labour's landslide defeat in 1996 he was elected party leader. Prescott was popular with many people, but his aggressive style and somewhat unintellectual attitude to politics led to him being countlessly outmaneuvered by Portillo. After the defeat Prescott resigned as leader, but remained a prominent and colourful figure within parliament until he stepped down at the 2010 election.

He led labour into the 2000 general election, although labour had been doing poorly in opinion polls he remained optimistic that he could perform well. Labour performed very badly, although improving their share of the vote since 1996 they suffered a net loss of seats to the conservatives and the liberals. After the defeat Prescott resigned as leader, but remained a prominent and colourful figure within parliament until he stepped down at the 2010 election.
