The film was largely known for its outstanding CGI and special effects that was said to have rivaled that of the widely successful 1993 film Jurassic Park which, according to Roland Emmerich was a huge inspiration for the film's style and effects. The film received mostly positive reviews and was an enormous box office success, reigning in over $600 million in the United States and nearly $800 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of 1998.
