  • Leonard Norman Cohen, CC, COQ (September 21, 1934 - November 7, 2016) was a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, poet and artist, who appeared in the show Miami Vice as Francois Zolan, who was working with INTERPOL Inspector (and international terrorist) Danielle Hier (played by Lisa Eichhorn), to find and kill Sirat Bandi (played by Xavier Coronel) in the episode "French Twist".
  • Musically, Cohen's earliest songs (many of which appeared on the 1967 album, Songs of Leonard Cohen) were rooted in European folk music. In the 1970s, his material encompassed pop, cabaret and world music. From the 1980s onwards, his high baritone voice evolved into lower registers (bass baritone and bass), with accompaniment from electronic synthesizers and female backing singers.
  • The Canadian poet, novelist and songwriter Leonard Cohen (21 September 1934 - 10 November 2016) achieved international success with the release of the LP Songs of Leonard Cohen (late 1967 in the US, early 1968 in the UK). He had already established a reputation as a songwriter after Judy Collins recorded his song "Suzanne" for her 1966 LP In My Life, and, despite the handicap of a (much-mocked) droning voice, became an accomplished live performer and a favourite of the hippy generation - without being a hippy himself. Cohen was older than most of the popular artists of that era and, despite obvious sympathies with his young audience, had affinities with the Beats rather than the hippies. He managed to outlast most of the "bedsit troubadours", the introverted singer-songwriters of the early

His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. In 2011 Cohen received a Prince of Asturias Award for literature.
  • Despite the fact that people from Canada can't write, speak, or think clearly, over a career chronicling the rise and fall of countless ancient civilizations, many of which that are now lost to history, Cohen managed to fool over a hundred Americans into thinking his words melt their hearts and souls. His words did not actually melt their hearts and souls, however — they are meaningless rhyming drivel. Here is an example:

  • Despite the fact that people from Canada can't write, speak, or think clearly, over a career chronicling the rise and fall of countless ancient civilizations, many of which that are now lost to history, Cohen managed to fool over a hundred Americans into thinking his words melt their hearts and souls. His words did not actually melt their hearts and souls, however — they are meaningless rhyming drivel. Here is an example: For reasons unclear even to poetry snobs, girls one tenth of Cohen's age believe this means he would make such sweet love to them and their naked bodies that they would lose their little hippy dippy minds. Which they say like it's a good thing. It does not mean this, however. The lyrics merely mean he was very cold up there in the Canadian wilderness and required a swift rescue.

In the 1970s, his material encompassed pop, cabaret and world music. From the 1980s onwards, his high baritone voice evolved into lower registers (bass baritone and bass), with accompaniment from electronic synthesizers and female backing singers. Over two thousand renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded. He was inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and was also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. While giving the speech at his induction into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters."

He managed to outlast most of the "bedsit troubadours", the introverted singer-songwriters of the early 1970s with whom he was sometimes bracketed by rock critics . In subsequent decades he continued to record and tour the world, an indication of his lasting popularity; in his own way he changed with the times and some of his later songs, notably "Hallelujah", rivalled his 1960s compositions in attracting cover versions from a wide variety of artists. In 2012 he was still touring and performing. Cohen's long and fascinating career as poet, novelist, singer-songwriter, recording artist, live performer and public figure is described in an extensive Wikipedia article..

In a speech at Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters." The critic Bruce Eder wrote an assessment of Cohen's overall career in popular music, writing, "[Cohen is] one of the most fascinating and enigmatic … singer/songwriters of the late '60s … [and] has retained an audience across four decades of music-making … Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon) [in terms of influence], he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century." The Academy of American Poets has commented more broadly on Cohen's overall career in the arts, including his work as a poet, novelist, and songwriter, stating that "[Cohen's] successful blending of poetry, fiction, and music is made most clear in Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, published in 1993, which gathered more than two hundred of Cohen's poems … several novel excerpts, and almost sixty song lyrics … While it may seem to some that Leonard Cohen departed from the literary in pursuit of the musical, his fans continue to embrace him as a Renaissance man who straddles the elusive artistic borderlines."

Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon) [in terms of influence], he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century."[3] One of his notable novels, Beautiful Losers (1966) received attention from the Canadian press and was considered controversial because of a number of sexually graphic passages.[4] The Academy of American Poets has commented more broadly on Cohen's overallCAREER in the arts, including his work as a poet, novelist, and songwriter, stating that "Cohen's successful blending of poetry, fiction, and music is made most clear in Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, published in 1993, which gathered more than 200 of Cohen's poems … several novel excerpts, and almost 60 song lyrics... While it may seem to some that Leonard Cohen departed from the literary in pursuit of the musical, his fans continue to embrace him as a Renaissance man who straddles the elusive artistic borderlines."[5] Cohen's first album was Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967) followed by Songs from a Room (1969) (featuring the often-recorded "Bird on the Wire") and Songs of Love and Hate (1971). His 1977 record Death of a Ladies' Man was co-written and produced by Phil Spector, which was a move away from Cohen's previous minimalist sound. In 1979 Cohen returned with the more traditional Recent Songs, which blended his acoustic style with jazz and Oriental and Mediterranean influences. "Hallelujah" was first released on Cohen's studio album Various Positions in 1984. I'm Your Man in 1988 marked Cohen's turn to synthesized productions and remains his most popular album. In 1992 Cohen released its follow-up, The Future, which had dark lyrics and references to political and social unrest. Cohen returned to music in 2001 with the release of Ten New Songs, which was a major hit in Canada and Europe. In 2006 Cohen produced and co-wrote Blue Alert, a collaboration with jazz chanteuse Anjani Thomas. After the success of his 2008–13 world tours, Cohen released the highest charting album in his entireCAREER, Old Ideas, to positive reviews. On 22 September 2014, one day after his 80th birthday, Cohen released his 13th studio album, Popular Problems, again to positive reviews.
