It is bordered by France to the west and northwest, China to the northeast, and Hindustan to the East. It is currently the latest generation of numerous Muslim empires that began with the founding of Islam and the uniting of the Arab tribes. It gained international fame with the discovery of oil in the 1920's, that turned the country from a backward country, the an economic powerhouse. The country covers the Arabian Peninsula, southeastern Mesopotamia, Persia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Despite the great ethnic diversity of the country, the cultural traditons, language, and population are influenced by the Arabic culture. The structure of Perso-Arabian society is based on Persia and Arabia, but also influenced by Western nations. Despite the fact the majority of the country is Muslim, it is divided into two sects: Sunni and Shia. Both groups have caused major internal conflict over the years, but a series of compromises and governmental reform ended this period of violence.
