Representative democracy is a form of democracy where people choose representatives to make decisions on their behalf, but only for a certain period of time, after which the voters can reappoint the same politicians or if they are unhappy with how things have gone, elect new ones. This is contrasted with Direct democracy where the voters make the decisions, and if they are unhappy with the result they have to sack themselves; and a Parliamentary democracy is a form of representative democracy. In most nations elected representatives are given a salary so they can work full-time governing the country. Democratic organisations will generally have a Constitution determining the powers of the representatives and the rights of those who are represented.
