Saxophonist Lol Coxhill and pianist David Bedford (1937-2011) were members of Kevin Ayers's band Whole World (along with Mike Oldfield plus others) and both also released albums under their own names on John Peel's Dandelion label. They both had backgrounds in avant-garde music, with Coxhill previously known as a free jazz improviser and Bedford as a contemporary classical composer. As a duo, the pair did one Peel session and also put out two retro-styled singles on Dandelion, the second being the last on the label (although 'Sonny Boy' / 'Oh Mein Papa' was credited to Will Dandy & The Dandylettes). They also worked together on other recordings including Coxhill's two Peel sessions and his 'Ear Of Beholder' LP.

Dandelion boss Clive Selwood would claim in his memoirs that he put Coxhill and Bedford in the studio together in the hope that they would produce "the worst record ever recorded." In the event, Selwood judged the results "the ultimate piece of kitsch" and held out hopes of a novelty hit, but neither single troubled the charts.
