This Alternate History series sets out to answer a vital question that has intrigued historians for millennia: What would the Napoleonic Wars have been like if the countries involved fought them with dragons? The series centers on William Laurence, a Navy captain who takes possession of a French ship transporting a valuable dragon egg home. Unfortunately for Laurence, the egg is very close to hatching when he takes it on board, and an "unharnessed" dragon who doesn't choose a captain within a day of hatching becomes feral and thus useless for anything but breeding stock. He ends up harnessing the baby dragon and naming him Temeraire, after a famous French ship captured by the British; the books center on the pair's adventures together.

  • Temeraire may refer either to the series of books by Naomi Novik or to the eponymous dragon character around whom the story centers. The series is set on Earth during the Napoleonic wars, but this is an Earth to which dragons are almost as normal as horses. Each country prides itself on its own breeds: some are light and fast for the speedy delivery of messages, some are massive creatures of war; some have special abilities such as breathing fire or spitting acid, but most don't. Each breed is recognizable by its size, colors, abilities, and intelligence.
  • The crew Temeraire was flitting around the mind of a pirate named Innosent. The general idea was to follow a similar path to the historic fantasy written by Naomi Novik. Ships represented dragons, cannon balls fuelled fire, and rum was - err - a tasty alcoholic drink that keeps pirates happy. Somewhere around here Innosent and a fellow rabid dragon fan (Larren) realised that it probably wouldn't make for the best recruiting to always say that the ships were really shape shifting dragons... but that doesn't stop them when people aren't looking.

And such the theory behind the crew was formed. Something was missing, however: ships. So the two hoarded the Pieces of Eight and coveted them like magpies (because everyone likes glittery golden things that go 'chink'). A sloop was purchased, known as the Unchanging Pickerel (and alternately christened Myth). Myth was soon followed by the Thick Sunfish (also alternately named Seketh). The deeds to the ships were held on an alternate account shared by the two pirates. All that remained was to sort out the internet and the fried modem.

Each breed is recognizable by its size, colors, abilities, and intelligence. The dragons in Temeraire are every bit as sentient as their human handlers. At hatching, they form a close bond with the person who is then obliged to be the dragon's handler for as long as they live, much in the way that a parent is obliged to their child. In most but not all cases, the relationship develops into one of deep mutual affection and trust.
