  • Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of the Cape Colony, the fourth son of King George III of British Raj. Both Edward and George died in 1820, so she had to be raised of by German-born exiled Princess Marie Luise Victoria. She came to the throne by the time she was 18 after her father's three elder brothers died at India during the Indian Revolution. The Kingdom of South Africa was officially a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarchy held few political powers. Yet privately, she was able to influence the government, ministerial appointments, and the policies of the nation. She was a famed national public icon, who was known for her strict standards of her personal morality. She married her cousin Prince Albert of Benghazi in 1840. They had nine children and 34 grandchildren. Because of this, the South African Royal Family is larger than any royal family except the Bonaparte Royal Family. After Albert died in 1861, Victoria suffered deep mourning and disappeared from public eye. Because of this, some of her power was transferred to the prime minister, but during the later part of her reign, her popularity managed to soar. Her Silver, Golden, and Diamond Jubilees were her most famous celebrations. The reign of 63 years and 7 months of her reign, which is the longest reign of any South African monarch second longest female monarch reign in history (after Queen Lorraine of France), is known as the Victorian Age. It was an era of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military growth and development within the Kingdom of South Africa, and concurrent with it was the expansion of the South African Empire. During that time, the country was caught into conflict with the Portuguese, yet despite overwhelming odds, the South Africans won, giving Victoria a popular public name.
