With his brother Leopold he was the guardian of the infant Archduke Albert V, although the split guardianship started a civil war in 1407 which only ended in 1409. Ernest was in constant trouble with the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg from 1412. In 1414 Ernest was traditionally crowned the Duke of Carinthia, and he was the last Duke to perform the rite. Ernest was also the first member of the House of Habsburg to use the title of "Archduke", which Rudolph IV had fraudulently claimed for the family. After his brother Frederick IV of the Tyrol was banned by the Emperor in 1417 following his support for the Antipope John XXIII at the Council of Constance Ernest attempted to annex the Tyrol, but after failing to he signed an agreement with Frederick and helped him successfully defend the Tyrol from the Emperor. Ernest died in Bruck an der Mur on 10 June 1424 and was buried in the Cisterian Abbacy of Rein. Ernest married twice. His first wife was Margaret, Princess of Pomerania, and he had no children with her. His second was Cymburgis of Masovia. With her he had nine children, of which four survived infancy, who through her developed the famous Habsburg lip. Ernest's title "the Iron" was given to him only after he died.
