Riverstar raises an eyebrow. "We're going to do the talking." I bristle at the condescending stare he gives her. "If I'm the master of the boreas lux now, I think I have the right to talk." "Who says you're the master?" "Well, you said Greer was my predecessor. And that she stopped you from helping us. Which means she had a fair amount of power over you -- or are you admitting you just feared her so much that you abandoned the Clans?" I say. Riverstar bristles, but Foreststar says quietly, "You're right, in part, Lucifer. Greer was stopping us from reaching out to Shadowstar or the other leaders, but we were afraid of her too. We are not invincible, I'm afraid. Greer awakened an ancient sort of evil, the kind of evil that the Clans were founded to keep cats away from." "DiAngelo. Asara. What is it all? How can we ever stop her from destroying the Clans?" Everly says. Her question makes me realize something she already has. Greer wanted to control the mountain. To achieve that goal, she had to keep at least some cats alive to rule over. But DiAngelo . . . What would DiAngelo want with live cats? He will destroy us all. That wolf has not kept alive simply through brute strength; he is a cunning monster, which makes him even more dangerous. And the Peak is the one source of asara he has left. It's a miracle he hasn't attacked already; he must be biding his time, plotting. Either that, or he's been hunting the Snow Guard cats who left the protection of the Peak. My stomach lurches violently. If they haven't found shelter . . . We have to find them. I make a mental note to organize a search party. We have to convince them to return, if they're even still alive.
