The 1963 Daytona 500 was a Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event held at Daytona International Speedway on February 24, 1963. Tiny Lund was not supposed to race for the Wood Brothers in the event, but during practice the original driver Marvin Panch was in a fiery accident. Lund rescued Panch from severe danger and when Panch couldn't drive, Lund was tapped the replacement. Lund then surprised everyone, holding off Fred Lorenzen by 24 seconds for Lund's first career victory. Eventual 1963 champion Joe Weatherly, finished 8th. Stats
