The budgies were four identical birds, unremarkable except for their ability to speak English. Despite this amazing skill, the sentences they uttered were snippets of sentences (often relating to housework) that made no sense out of context. Despite this, the birds were extremely valuable and attracted the attention of Rocky, a Transylvanian crime boss. Along with Meek and Moose, Rocky stole the budgies and went on the run from the police, demanding a million pounds for their release. The budgies' story made front page news and the worldwide attempt to save them almost saw the criminals captured. Scared, they decided to hide out in Castle Frank N. Stein.

The budgies' story made front page news and the worldwide attempt to save them almost saw the criminals captured. Scared, they decided to hide out in Castle Frank N. Stein. Inside, Igor recognised the budgies from the newspapers. When Professor Frank N. Stein's giant vegetables erupted and distracted the crooks, the heroes grabbed the Maltese Budgies and took them into the kitchen, where the Prof fed them some of his growth formula. They soon transformed into bulky, anthropomorpic warriors adorned with their initial letters and broke out of the kitchen to tackle their aggressors. Pythagoras, armed with a frying pan, took out Meek while one of the "A"s threw a plunger at Rocky. Two more teamed up to take down Moose, bringing an end to their criminal acts. Armed with Castle Frank N. Stein's kitchen utensils, the Maltese Budgies began their career as famous crime fighters, despite nobody knowing what they were talking about.
