Luughnasad is the first of three harvest festivals, celebrated on August 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. The Irish word "lunasa" means "August". It honors the Celtic Sun God Lugh (Loo). It is principally a grain festival; featuring corn, wheat and barley wich are ready to be picked in August. Native Americans honored the Corn Grandmother this time of year calling it the Festival of the Green Corn. At their anual August Ceresalia the romans celebrated the grain goddess, Ceres. The birth of Isis, the Egyption sun goddess, was celebrated during this time. Romans also celebrated Vulcan, god of the forge and gaurdian of its fire. This Sabbat honored the grain god, Dagon, In acient Phoenicia. There are and were many differant cultures. Yet, they all seem to point in very similar directions.
