- The Tin Woodman was a character from the Earth story The Wizard of Oz. He was a mechnical man who longed to be Human. His lamentation of not being Human was expressed in the tune If I Only Had a Heart. By the end of the story, he learned that he was always Human. He did not realize this as he worried so much. (TNG: "The Schizoid Man" ) In the episode, Dr. Ira Graves referred to the Tin Woodman as a mechnical man. Another name for the Tin Woodman was Tin Man.
- The Tin Woodman was originally a Munchkin named Nick (Niccolo) Chopper. Niccolo Chopper was renowned for his ability to play the piccolo, and he is shown playing a piccolo in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz film of 1910. His father was a woodman who chopped down trees, and when Nick grew up he became one as well. This tenderness remained with him even after he became Emperor of the Winkies, as evidenced when he refused to let a butterfly be killed for the casting of a spell.
