Norman was signed to a development deal by NBC in 1954, where he got a role in its series Matinee Theater. As a character actor, he frequently played mostly tough guys and authority figures, often in sports team coach or police detective type roles. In Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, he had a memorable appearance as a coach who drowned after collapsing face-down into a bowl of chicken soup, and he coached Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson in the film Semi-Tough.
