While at Galileo's trial, he covertly spilled the priming from Marius Pontigrazzi's flintlock pistol, as he was concerned that Marius might hurt himself with it. This turned out to be fortunate when Marius drew the pistol and attempted to shoot Pope Urban VIII. In 1635, he attempted to start a Committee of Correspondence in Rome, opening a CoC pub called "Frank's Place". He quietly began the CoC movement in Rome, serving pizza and wine, all the while talking about the politics of the day. The committee also started a public soccer league. He was quite angry with the various slanderous handbills being passed around Rome, making it known that they were not his, but the work of the Spaniard Quevedo. The inquisition of Rome was extremely uncomfortable when he would come in to complain about the slander. (He could not have printed them even if he had been inclined to, as he did not yet have a printing press, and was leery of using local printers for anything other than flyers promoting his business.) In linking the unrest in Rome to the Spanish, particularly Quevedo and Cardinal Borja, he may have inadvertently contributed to anti-foreigner sentiment in Rome, and even to the incident at Borja's villa, which Borja had wanted so he would have a pretext to send for troops. Shortly after arriving in Rome, his wife Giovanna became pregnant. During Cardinal Borja's invasion of Rome, Frank and Giovanna were captured by the Spanish captain Don Vincente.
