Elemental staves (the staff of earth, the staff of air, the staff of fire, and the staff of water) provide an unlimited amount of runes of their stated type to cast spells while wielding them.

- Runes are stones that gives benefits to all members of a clan when activated. You can gain runes by looting; runes used to be available in General Stores in the various towns.
- Runes are ancient artifacts made of pure energy, when combined with the Receptacle, they create the powerful Medallion, that allows a person to switch worlds. Kya needs the receptacle in order to group the runes together, which will open a passage to bring her and Frank back home. There are 7 Runes altogether, collecting them also increases Kya’s magic capacity by 50; once Kya obtains all of the runes she has 500 magic altogether.
- The Runes are a key item in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. - Runes can be inserted into some weapons and armors in order to give them special abilities. Once a rune is added to an item, it becomes part of the item and cannot be removed. Look for empty slots next to the icon of your weapons and armor to see how many Runes each item can accept. Color Runes are also available; they change the color of your armor, but do not take up a rune slot. You can buy these in Aesir or occasionally you will find them off destroyed enemies.

Runes cannot be made by knights, but can be used by any profession. In order to make a rune, you need to have that rune's specific rune making spell. For example, to make an Intense Healing Rune, you need to buy the "Intense Healing Rune" spell for 600 gp, not just the "Intense Healing" spell bought for 350 gp. When making runes you will use your soul points. Rune spells always start with Ad.
