Vile spirits are semi-unique undead monsters that first appeared in ADOM v. 1.2.0 r48. They are the spirits of past, slain player characters that have now been twisted by Chaos into evil monstrosities. Any dungeon where a player character once died is capable of spawning a vile spirit in future playthroughs, and the spirit is always named after the slain player with a suffix based on their former race. For example, Dwarf Vile Spirits have suffixes such as "Of the Shield-Born", while Troll Vile Spirits have suffixes such as "The Wretched".

Description
  • Vile spirits are semi-unique undead monsters that first appeared in ADOM v. Each vile spirit exhibits a set of special powers that varies between each instance. Their attacks often have the ability to drain Strength or Toughness and/or can pierce armor, which can make them very dangerous in melee combat. They also inherit some power from the equipment that was worn on their former body; their attack power seems to be boosted based on the weapon that they were wielding, and they can use whatever missiles they had equipped. They may also have additional powers such as elemental/status resistances, that may or may not depend on the intrinsic powers that their bodies had. When slain, vile spirits will leave behind equipment carried by the character that they spawned from; these items will be cursed, however, and may also be broken and/or rusty . While vile spirits are challenging at any level, they are exceptionally deadly if encountered in the early-game dungeons such as the Unremarkable cave, the Puppy Cave, the Village Dungeon or the Small Cave. They can be quite easily dealt with by magic or missiles, though it can be difficult for PCs to keep a safe distance from them as they tend to move diagonally.
