Hard Leather Armor was typically manufactured by trimming leather armor into separate pieces and boiling them in oil. Although this would make the leather much less flexible, it was more resistant to slashing and piercing than just the untreated leather. Making them in separate pieces was one way to overcome the lack of flexibility.
