Jake Kurland was a young civilian aboard the USS Enterprise-D in 2364. Although a civilian teenager, he trained aboard the starship as a shuttle pilot, likely as part of his attempt to make it into Starfleet Academy. He missed out on getting the chance to take the final Starfleet Academy entrance exam by only 32 points, and as result became somewhat depressed. He stole the type 7 shuttlecraft Copernicus, intending to join a freighter on Beltane IX and asked Captain Picard to tell his father he's sorry but had to do this. However, the shuttle got into difficulties, and Kurland was almost killed.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 255) , Jake Kurland was the son of an Enterprise-D officer.

Als Kandidat für die Akademie hat er Zugang zu vielen Bereichen des Schiffs, darunter auch zu den Shuttlerampen. Daher gelingt es ihm wenig später, ein Shuttle zu stehlen. Die Sicherheitsprotokolle legt er durch Aktivierung des Katastrophenprogramms lahm. Eigentlich will er nach Beltane IX fliegen um dort auf einem Frachter anzuheuern. Allerdings verliert er den Antrieb und droht in der Atmosphäre von Relva VII zu verglühen. Captain Jean-Luc Picard hilft ihm jedoch mit einem originellen Flugmanöver, die Kontrolle wieder zu erlangen: Er soll direkt auf den Planeten zusteuern und bei wieder aktiviertem Antrieb steil hochziehen. So prallt er förmlich von der Atmosphäre ab. Er kehrt darauf zur Enterprise zurück. Um seine Disziplin zu schulen, bekommt er später Unterweisungen von Commander William T. Riker. Als er später auf Captain Picard trifft bereut er seine Tat und entschuldigt sich beim Captain für seinen Fehler. (TNG: ) Jake Kurland wurde von Stephen Gregory gespielt und erhielt seine deutsche Stimme von Andreas Fröhlich.
