  • George I (1769-1854), the eldest son of King Henry IX, was the first king to bear the titles King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Ireland, and King of America, both of which titles were created in 1817, shortly after the end of the Second Global War, which he had led Britain through. Early in his reign, in 1795, the French successfully invaded the Netherlands, setting up a puppet Batavian Republic. In 1798, an invasion of Ireland was likewise successful, setting up a new Éire Republic. Those territories were not restored to Britain until after the end of the Second Global War. At the end of that War, the British Empire found itself in need of restructuring. Her eastern North American possessions were recognized as a new North American Confederation, while Ireland and the Netherlands demanded a new relationship with England and Scotland. And so, the new United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland, and the Netherlands was created, giving each of its constituents greater internal autonomy.
