The postal code (Postleitzahl, or PLZ) is a way to identify where a parcel is to be delivered within Germany and its outlying territories. In 1946, Germany instituted a series of region codes designed to aid in sending parcels in the wartorn country as it attempted to rebuild. Each state was given a 2-digit code, plus a single digit codes for the regierungsbezirke of each state.
