| - Largest City: Ice Harbor (242,693) Total Population: 660,007 GOVERNMENT The state capital has been in Hyderville since 1923. The location was choosen because of it's "central location." In 1923 on official documents, it was said to "Have a full view of the state, yet while safely tucked away from the rest of the world." The current governor elected by the people is Brandon Chai, who is an Independent. Chai was born and raised in Klikiat Village. First settled by the natives thousands of years ago. The earliest remains of a body ever to be found in the region dates back to around the time of Jesus Christ. It was not until the 1690's did a European man discover the area in history books. Ancient explorers called the land "White Death." In 1800 some settlements were made on the southern shores of the state. The town of Whalefin (Now called Solice) was the largest of the Eastern State settlements by 1820 with a population of just over 2,000 people. The United States of Westernland made the area a territory in 1822. Gold was found in Mikels Station in 1833. It is said the towns population swelled upwards of 5,000 people during the goldrush. An even bigger goldrush occured in 1857 that helped nearly double the population of the territory. It's harsh winters were hard on goldrushers, but the greed of money was hotter in their heads then anything. Towns and rail sprouted all over the state. Gold diggers were as far north as present day Wrangler. With gold being a great possibility wealth, The United States of Westernland jumped on the deal of making the territory a state. Northern State became a state in 1859. Indians agreed to the land becoming a state and were allowed to live on their land freely and to follow their own costums. Very little conflict has ever arisen. In 1866 some Klikiat Indians were angry at settlers and killed 8 people. That was enough for the territory capital of the time, Solice, to have a fort built to protect settlers up north. The fort was built in between two rival tribes, the Klikiat and Kameiak. Today a modern military place stands where the old wooden fort once stood. Many military installations where build across the white wilderness during the 1940s. Some old abandoned bunker tunnels can be visited and toured in Warbanks. In the 1960s, drilling for oil became a prosperous source of money. Grozenburg became the biggest town for fossil fuel production in the state and still is. Grozenburg actually produces more fossil fuel then anyplace else in the country. Today Northern State is a modern member of The United States of Westernland and pulls it's own weight well. It's fishing and oil industries are a major source of income, and it's natural untamed beauty draws in tourists year round. POPULATION: 242,693 INFO: Ice Harbor is big city living for the state of Northern State. It's the biggest city in the state with 242,693 people. It has a major university and colleges. It is the technology center of the state and has the biggest seaport and most used airport in the state. The airport has daily flights to major airports in Seawest City, Evergreen City, and even Sorenson Bay, there are more too. Certainly the terminal airport here connects to smaller airfields around the state to give smaller communites aid from long winters. Shipments are sent to the docks here and loaded on train, truck, or plane and sent off all across the state. Major hospitals are also located in the city. The city has many buildings built from the 1930s to 1950s. Lots of old block tall highrises. No major tall new development has occured in the city since the 1970s. Many newer small buildings have been built, but nothing real tall. This city is in a more temperate region for weather. It has cold snowy winters and warm to mild summers. Every winter the Northern State Dogidead Snow Dog race ends here after it's start point from Warbanks. Dog teams travel the state to finish the exciting race. Ice Harbor has a fairly high low income sector, and many blue collar industry jobs at the port. Ice Harbor's downtown has a few shops, but is mainly housing and corporate business. Most shopping has to be done outside of Ice Harbor's downtown area at big chain stores. It's one of the downturns of a city like this to not have good downtown shopping. There is the Ice Harbor Stadium which has the states only major league football team that is part of the WNFL (Westernland Nation Football League.) It houses many concerts and other events such as conventions. HISTORY: Settlers first came to the town in the early 1800s. Most bypassed this area to instead move to Whalefin (Modern day Solice). The town was incorporated long after it was settled. It was not until December 4, 1860 was the town incorporated, a year after the territory became a state. Ice Harbor was always competing with Solice to be the number one city in the territory. A major blow took place in the 1820s when it lost to becoming the territorial capital. In 1840, a major fire ripped through 3 blocks of downtown Ice Harbor and the people had to start over again. In 1850, the town had a bustling population of 3,200, which was less at the time then Solice. When Northern State became a state in 1859, Solice and Ice Harbor were both in a battle again to become the state capital. This time Ice Harbor won and remained state capital until 1923. Ice Harbor had a "secret" submarine base in it's icy waters during World War II and helped build navy ships for the United States. POPULATION: 201,022 INFO : Northern State's second largest city, Solice has a population of 201,022 and growing at a steady rate. It is a industrial center and a transportation center just behind larger Ice Harbor. People live among the more modern/ hip city of Solice. It is a college city too with The University of Northern State. A rival college to Ice Harbor's and Warbank's. The port does lots of eporting and importing from the other states within the United States of Westernland. Most ships come from Seawest City area in Western State though other big ships can come from Evergreen City and as far away as Grandview in Western State. Located in Northern State's southern portion, this is the most moderate and mild area of Northern State. They have snowy cold winters, but mild to nicely warm summers. Snow melts in late spring and returns mid fall to early winter. Solice has all the shopping it's citizens need to stay busy during the long winter months. Lots of buildings are brightly colored to keep spirits up during weeks of cloudy days. Police, fire, and medical are all in the city. Three major highways connect to the city. One from Ice Harbor that connects to the rest of the state. A straight Northern route to Mikels Station which takes you through barren snow land for miles and miles, and another towards the international airport and a long drive along the coast to the bridge connecting you to Eastern State. Northern State is accessible to Eastern State by road, but not connected to Western State in any way except air travel and boat travel. HISTORY: First Europeans landed not far from present day Solice in the late 1600s. It is expected Vikings landed here at an even earlier date. Solice Indians had the first civilization here and believed deeply in Solar related activities as their gods. They relied heavily on fishing and hunting polar bears. In 1800, explorers visited the land and then came back in 1805 with more settlers. They platted a town and named it Whalefin and lived peacefully with the Solice Indians. Christian Missionaries converted 80% of the indian tribe, while the few indians who did not convert moved up north towards Mikels Station. The towns name was changed to Solice after the indians, when it became the territorial capital in 1822. It was a major player in leading goldrushers during the 1850s to Mikels Station. Train rails were laid from Solice to Mikels Station and rival city Ice Harbor. During the 1850s, Ice Harbor and Solice competed to becoming a state capital but ended up losing to Ice Harbor. Ever since that lose, the whale oil and fishing industry prospered and the 1870 population of Solice was at a little more then 10,000. It was not until 1920 did Ice Harbor pass Solice in population. A new capital was to be named in 1923, but both Solice and Ice Harbor lost to Hyderville which is virtually isolated. Still many do not understand that choice. Solice had a deep water base for navy ships during World War II and helped create bombs and missles for the United States Military. POPULATION: 130,257 INFO : Well known for it's fishing industry and construction of ice breaker ships. Warbanks is located in central Northern State and is the third biggest city in the state. Also home to the Northern Snow State University, which is the one of two major universities in the state. Downtown is known for being the best shopping in all of Northern State in one location. Winters can be harsh and cold with blizzards and white outs often. Temperatures can dip well below zero degrees. Tourist attractions include sport fishing and whale watching, plus helicopter rides around the area. Also you can take tours of war bunkers used in World War II. HISTORY : Natives called the area "Nampout" which later was called Warbanks when settlers moved in during the 1830s. Warbanks experienced a large population boom during the 1857 goldrush. Train tracks were built into the town and people moved in around the gold mines. Warbanks never fought to become a territorial capital but it sort of was known as the capital of inland Northern State. Since Solice and Ice Harbor were so far south, and often kept to themselves, Warbanks usually helped manage inland towns better then it's southern counterparts. By 1900, the population in Warbanks reached 20,000 people, making it the thrid biggest city in the state. In the 1940s, the U.S. Military was granted to build a underground military complex. Some of the tunnels go right under downtown. Today you can tour sections of the tunnel. In 1969, a 7.2 earthquake shook Warbanks and destroyed part of downtown. In 1985, a dinosaur's bones were found about 5 miles east of the city. To this day, the area is quite busy with archealogists. The Northern Snow State University specializes in paleontology and other geology related events, but follows a catastrophic viewpoint and not a false uniform view much of the world follows. POPULATION: 32,774 INFO : Wrangler is truly a city in no-mans land. The trees end right around Wrangler, and the land becomes barren tundra. The last major settlement in the great white north, until you hit caribou country. Wrangler is on a small jetty of land oustretched over the sea, and experiences harsh cold winters and cool summers. Life is completely different out here, but it is the most modern place until you head south. Water, and power are regularly being conserved and it's not usual to see daily citizens in the city wearing backpacks prepared for whatever weather or conditions arise. Some major shopping chains made stores up in Wrangler to make it as normal a life as possible, but you cannot take the wild out of Wranglers wild past. HISTORY : Wrangler was first settled by local natives until they left the area in the 1800s. It was not until 1923 did anything even return to Wrangler. Being so far away from eveything, Wrangler was simply a weather station. 1933 saw the first modern day permanent residents. The city really grew and sprouted when gold was found in the area. This late "Gold Rush" took place during the "Great Depression" and it say many people who had nothing, go in search of something. By 1945, Wrangler sprouted from nothing and had a population of 18,000. As time passed, the city grew, with new industries and a strong fishing base serving many of the citizens as a job source. Downtown today has some offices for local governments, but mainly housing and shops.
