- Therianthropes, or therians, are a subset of otherkin. Therians believe the nature of their soul is that of a real animal, native to earth and of scientifically documented existence. Some therians deny the existence of otherkin, a community with very similar origins. The therian community dates back to the newsgroup Alt.horror.werewolves, where people would discuss the common "shifts" they experience and their spirituality.
- A Therianthrope is a member of the contemporary subculture of Therianthropy, which is based on a spiritual, psychological, and/or neurobiological identification as a non-human animal. Therianthropes understand that they have physical human bodies. Therian is the short form of therianthrope. These are the current terms for a person who has a strong internal self-identification as a being of a non-human species. Around 2005, Therian became the commonly used short form of Therianthrope, replacing the old term Were. The term “therianthropy” was first mentioned in AHWW on December, 14, 1994.

There are many sub-types of therians that may or may not be mutually exclusive:
* Contherianthropy
* Suntherianthropy
* Vacillant Therianthropy

Alt.horror.werewolves began as a discussion group for fans of literary and film werewolves and evolved into a roleplay fantasy before spirituality entered into the equation, possibly having been carried from the already existing otherkin community.
