The Forest of Shadows which encompasses most of the Principality of Ostland is the darkest of all The Empire's woodlands. Within its gloomy depths, there still lurks bands of Chaos Beastmen and goblinoids - remnants of the last Incursions of Chaos some 200 years ago. The Ostlanders will occasionally mount expeditions to root out and destroy their lairs, but only an army would dare spend the hours of darkness beneath its moss-shrouded branches.

However, the Ostlanders have always been a stubborn people, and after enduring countless invasions from the hated Northerners, the people of Ostland truly became a community of survivalist and after battles-end, these people have always taken up the tools of civilizations and begin rebuilding their homeland once more.

It lies south of the White River and the village of Deven Ride. Although it was once presumably possible to traverse the river and forest, as the whole region was once part of the kingdom of Manetheren, in modern times the river flows so fast it is almost uncrossable, and the forest is so overgrown, wild, and dangerous that people simply don't bother making the attempt. Garen's Wall is located in the eastern part of the forest. Due to its remoteness and unexplored nature, the forest is sometimes rumored to hold great treasures, and several Hunters of the Horn visited the forest under the impression that the Horn of Valere may be hidden there.
